Proxy Types Compared

The four main proxy types are datacenter, mobile, residential, and TOR. Each trades cost, speed, and detectability differently — datacenter is cheapest and fastest, mobile is hardest to block, residential looks most like a real user, and TOR offers the strongest anonymity.

Datacenter proxies

Datacenter proxies are IPs hosted in commercial data centers (AWS, Hetzner, OVH and similar providers), not assigned to residential ISPs. They are the fastest and cheapest proxy type, ideal for high-volume web scraping against targets that do not heavily fingerprint inbound IPs.

Best for

  • High-volume web scraping of low-protection targets
  • SERP monitoring at scale on permissive search engines
  • Internal tooling, load testing, and API integration
  • Any workload where cost per request matters more than stealth

Mobile proxies

Mobile proxies route traffic through real 4G/5G cellular IPs assigned by carriers such as Verizon, T-Mobile, or Vodafone. Because they share IPs with millions of legitimate phone users on the same carrier-grade NAT, they are extremely hard to block — the gold standard for sneaker bots, social platform automation, and account management.

Best for

  • Sneaker bots and limited-edition retail drops
  • Social platform automation (Instagram, TikTok, Reddit)
  • Mobile app QA and carrier-specific testing
  • Sites that aggressively block datacenter and residential ranges

Residential proxies

Residential proxies route requests through real consumer home internet connections assigned by ISPs like Comcast, BT, or Deutsche Telekom. They look like ordinary household users to target sites, making them the right choice for ad verification, brand protection, and scraping heavily-protected e-commerce or ticketing platforms.

Best for

  • Ad verification and creative compliance monitoring
  • Brand protection and counterfeit detection
  • E-commerce price intelligence on hardened marketplaces
  • Ticketing platforms and bypassing geo-restrictions

TOR proxies

TOR proxies route traffic through the Tor network — a volunteer-run mesh of anonymity relays — exiting from one of several thousand public exit nodes. They offer the strongest anonymity guarantees but the slowest speed and the most-blocked IP space, suitable for threat intelligence, dark-web monitoring, and access to .onion services.

Best for

  • Threat intelligence and dark-web monitoring
  • Access to .onion services and hidden services
  • Security research where source anonymity is mandatory
  • Independent verification of public information
